How to Clean Keycaps

When your keycaps get dirty, it’s important to clean them right away! The best way to do this is by soaking them in warm water for at least five hours. This will remove dust, oil, and other debris from them. This process will also keep your keycaps from getting damaged during the cleaning process. Once they are dry, you can reassemble them. Using a soft brush or cotton swab, you can remove any remaining dust. Replace them with the photo on them.

A microfiber cloth is the best option for this task. You can also use cleaning wipes, which work wonders. Another option is hydrogen peroxide. Using hydrogen peroxide will disinfect keycaps as well as the surface. Cleaning your keycaps regularly will also keep your keyboard free of germs. Soak it in the solution for at least 15 minutes, and then dry it thoroughly. Afterward, wipe the board down with a microfiber cloth.

Before cleaning your keycaps, you need to check the condition of your keyboard. While surface-level dust is easy to see, you should always look underneath the keycaps to determine the depth of the buildup. You can also try cleaning the switches underneath floating keys. Some of these models have RGB backlighting, which allows you to inspect them without taking them off. And if the keycaps are in a particularly bad condition, it may be better to replace them with a new one.

Another option for cleaning your keys is to use canned air. However, this method is risky because it can blow dust and other particles into the switches. In addition, it may also release some liquid particles that could damage your keyboard. To avoid any risks, make sure to keep your keys clean and dust-free. Soapy water is an excellent alternative to canned air. If you have a laptop with a plastic case, use a paper towel.

If you’re not sure how to clean your keys, you can take a picture of your keyboard and refer to it for guidance. You can follow the steps in reverse order. Once you’ve finished cleaning the keys, reinstall the keycaps. If you accidentally remove a keycap by hand, you risk damaging the keys. It’s a good idea to keep a picture of your keyboard so you can identify which keys have been cleaned and which need extra work.

After removing your keycaps, remove them from your keyboard and clean them carefully with isopropyl alcohol. If you’re dealing with stubborn stains, you can also use a cotton swab soaked in soap and alcohol to remove the stain. Make sure to let the boards and switches dry completely before starting any keyboard repair. You can also use this as a reference image when you do a repair on your keyboard.

If you’re using a keyboard that is sticky, you’ll need to take things a step further to get rid of the germs. First, unplug your keyboard, and then use a cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol or nail polish remover. Wipe the surface of the keyboard using the cloth, rubbing it through the gaps in between the keys. If that doesn’t work, you can also use a cotton swab to scrub the sticky residue.
